Most of you know that about a year ago I was introduced to CrossFit by an old friend. At first I was like, wow, that seems crazy hard. It's expensive. I don't know how I will find the time to stay committed. I'm not in good enough shape for that. I don't even know what a burpee is nevermind try and do one! It's too far. BUT then.....another friend went and convinced me that I HAVE to try it. In the same breath she said, you won't want to stop....ever! Well, she was right! For most of my adult life I have always been into fitness. From local 5k's to Sprint Triathalons..I even snuck a half-marathon in there along the way. My gym rat days have come and gone and usually would "go" because of boredom. Enter CrossFit! The not knowing of what I'll be doing that day mentality keeps me on my toes....the changing of the workout keeps me interested and challenged....the support I have when there's more weight on your shoulders (literally) than I weigh gives me that 'holy shit I just did that' feeling...the sense of community and knowledge for eating healthy is better than any book! It has become part of my schedule at least 3 mornings a week. We have found a way to make it work financially. Everything can be modified so it DOES NOT MATTER what kind of shape you are in. And as far as burpees...well, they aren't my favorite but I have learned to do them...a lot of them...even one-armed! My point is that I found my passion...my drug. I found something that I pretty much can’t live with out at this stage of my life and it's awesome! The physical changes are always welcomed, but it’s the mental strength that I am embracing. It’s the way I feel when I’m not exercising that keeps me on top! It’s the community of others that are constantly supporting and inspiring me to do better. It's the proudness in my son's voice when they say "wow mommy, are you gonna pick that up?" It's the fact that after a year, my husband has started CrossFit and has gained a whole new level of appreciation for the warm up alone...and my soreness! CrossFit isn't for everyone but I promise there is something out there for everyone! My point is to stop the excuses, and just get out and try something new...boot camp, Zumba, spin, kickboxing, yoga...anything that will give you the support, inspiration and feeling of accomplishment that you may be looking for! Don’t be scared. Leave your pride at the door and push yourself into a life of physical health and mental wealth! You won’t regret it!!!
Happy Earth Day everyone!! This day isn't necessarily a "party" day or reason for a cupcakes, but it should be a day to think about what you do to take care of our earth. Everything I do is a work in progress...everything! I look at today as a reminder of the things that I should do as well as what I shouldn't. I may not remember my reusable bags EVERY shopping trip but I did finally tackle my first garden! I recycle to the best of my ability and am teaching my family to do the same...which is actually something they are pretty good at! Now I just need to work on my parents-lol! There are a lot of things I would like to do but as we all know...life happens and can sometimes put things off! I really want to learn how to compost..the right way! I want to 100% forgo plastic ziploc bags and replace them with reusable snack bags! I am learning how to upcycle and re-invent things in my closet rather than buying new. I shop local when I can and work trips to the produce stand/farmer's market into my schedule! I hope each and every one of you have some sort of goals that you are working towards and if you don't, well get on it already!!! Go outside...breath the clean air...take a walk...clear your head...soak up some sun...take care of this precious earth as it's our only one!!! xoxo
Today is a big day! Why--well because I am actually "working" in my "office." Ha-you say?! Well, for those that know me, this has been a pretty dififcult task. Granted I only have to walk up the steps to sit in my very comfy, cute and colorful chair (pictured left), it has been hard to actually SIT and not feel distracted by my surroundings. Laundry, dirty dishes, dust bunnies, empty fridge, scholastic book forms, etc....But as a friend recently said, "It's Spring and time to turn over a new leaf." My work may not bring in actual dollars, but it does provide me with something more important--a sense of worth, an outlet for my cluttered mind, a way to focus on and research things that make ME happy and at the end of the day, somewhat accomplished. I may only make this a 2x a week habit, but for now, I am thankful to have those 2 days! My love goes out to those who have stuck by me during this roller coaster journey of "Hot Green Mama." I hope that I can provide a small piece of positive to your lives as I try to fill the tiny holes in mine! xoxo
April is Autism Awareness Month! I am celebrating by supporting a dear friend whose son is on the spectrum. I thought I knew a lot about Autism because, well, I've watched Jenny McCarthy on Oprah and I've read magazine articles about Holly Robinson Peete. What else was there? Ha! It wasn't until I met my friend and her family a couple of years ago when our boys played soccer together at age 3, or maybe it was 4. Since then, we have become closer and they have opened my eyes to the daily struggles that they face...as a family and as individuals. There is a lot of controversy about the cause of Autism but at the end of the day, these innocent children are living with something that is out of their control. It is up to us, as fellow parents and human beings, to not turn our backs or judge but to support and try to understand Autism. It's hard for me to write this because there is so so much that I do not know nor will ever fully understand, but I know enough to be there and show support for those that would do the same for me. For the month of April, I will donate 25% off my Hot Green Mama t-shirt sales to the Volusia County Autism Speaks Walk this coming November. If you are not in Volusia County, I'm sure you can find a chapter in your area that would love and appreciate your support Please take a look at my little shop...I'm sure you know a "Hot Green Mama" or two! xoxo
